The team was proud of their speed-to-lead numbers. Average first response under 10 minutes. Consistent across all locations. The dashboard looked great. Revenue wasn't moving.
They assumed the problem was lead quality, the market, or pricing. Nobody looked at what happened after the first response went out. Fast gets you in the door but it doesn't close the deal.

ON THE PATH
Speed-to-lead is One Metric. The Path Has Five.
Speed-to-lead is a good metric to fix first because slow response kills deals before they start. But once you fix it, it stops being the constraint. The path moves on to the next weak point and if you're only watching speed, you'll miss it.
Getting there fast with the wrong message is just a faster way to lose the lead. A generic first response that doesn't connect to what the buyer actually asked is barely better than a slow one. The buyer notices the speed. They also notice that you didn't read their inquiry. Speed earns you the window. What you do inside the window is what converts.
Fast isn't the same as right. Speed-to-lead gets you in the door. The message, the follow-up, and the path after it have to close the deal.
1. Check what your first response actually says. Pull you last ten first responses. Read them out loud. How many reference what the buyer specifically asked? How many are generic?
2. Measure what happens after the first response. Speed-to-lead only measures the first touch. What happens next? How many follow-up attempts does each lead get?
3. Match the first message to what the buyer actually asked. Each inquiry tells you something about the buyer needs right now so use it. A buyer who asked about pricing gets a different first response than one who asked about availability.
